Although Colombia relies on hydroelectric power for its basic electricity supply, when rainfall is low, the country turns to power plants run by natural gas and other fuels. One such plant is Termocandelaria Power, near Cartagena, on the Caribbean coast. To generate the needed power on demand, the company last year decided to convert from natural gas to dual-fuel, gas-or-diesel operation.

Moving pieces of project cargo that weight hundreds of metric tons or are five stories tall or higher from point A to point B can be a challenge of monumental proportions. And when the location is remote, the river is shallow, and the best bet for a berth is a muddy riverbank, the challenge can easily reach epic proportions.
march/april 2010
The secret to moving project cargo in Colombia is improvisation, companies such as Kuehne + Nagel say. Although the size of France, Germany and Britain combined, Colombia has only 102,526 miles of road, and few of these are more than two lanes, making it a challenge to move cargo wider than 13 feet.
march/april 2010
India has survived the global recession relatively unscathed. Just look at its gross domestic product – growth of 7.3 percent in 2008 and an estimated 6.4 percent in 2009, according to the World Bank — compared with global GDP growth of 1.7 percent and minus 2.2 percent, respectively.
march/april 2010
Colombia has almost come full circle in the past two decades, evolving from a country that in the 1990s suffered an exodus of foreign investors because of rampant political insecurity to an attractive economy that is today luring a surge of investment as the military wins back control of resource-rich areas from cocaine-smuggling rebels.

In the January issue we noted that 2010 promises to be a challenge for the wind power industry as general equipment availability and transport capacity begins to tighten up, placing additional constraints on supply chains. As more countries enter the market, the shortage of equipment to transport and to erect wind farms will be felt on a global basis in the second half of 2010 and into 2011.
march/apriL 2010
The importance of China and India cannot be over-estimated at a time when demand for commodities in Europe and North America is still feeling the effects of the global economic downturn.
march/april 2010
While neighbouring Venezuela falls off an economic cliff, Colombia is basking in an unprecedented moment in the country’s development, with record foreign investment more than tripling the levels of heavy lift cargo flowing into the country.
march/april 2010
South America, Africa and Asia are emerging as three of the key areas for future mining industry developments and related heavy lift/project cargo business. With that new business, though, could come a raft of new operational challenges for logistics providers forced to work with often inadequate transport infrastructures.

Wind power companies routinely face performance issues throughout their supply chains. These functional “gaps” often become problems that can prove very costly. Some gaps are more obvious than others.
february 2010
For those responsible for construction of wind farms, risks literally could be just around the corner. If your project logistics resources do not have extensive civil engineering experience, there could be serious consequences—from missed deadlines to cost over-runs. You want a resource that anticipates every curve in the road.

january/february 2010
As China goes, so goes Asia. The sheer size of China’s market, its colossal scale of development and its drive to “indigenize” manufacturing will affect the region and indeed the globe for the foreseeable future.
january/february 2010
After a period of booming speculation, the Asian market for oil- and gas-related project cargo was smacked down by the recession. “But as with nature, industrial and financial markets in today’s international trade have their own way of correcting themselves,” said Martin Runshaug, Singapore-based commercial director for BDP Oil and Gas Logistics. “The global recession, which seems to have turned the corner, reintroduced the ‘survival of the fittest.’ ”
january 2010
Although wind power is the fastest-growing energy source, in many instances the skills required to move components to the project site have not kept pace. Wind power components are not your typical shipments, after all. If you are responsible for the construction of a wind farm, you want delivery of all components to be made on time and on budget, as well as eliminating downtime due to equipment shortages. And as the manufacturer you want your product to arrive quickly, intact, and fully functional, with the shortest effective hold times on inventory in order to improve your cash flow.

For
most manufacturing and retail supply chains, the greatest challenges
center on managing suppliers, vendors, inbound logistics and other
front-end processes. The final delivery link is often the easy part
that can be handled by any reliable transportation provider. With
large project supply chains, however, the order of difficulty is
often just the opposite. The final logistics leg can make or break
the success of huge industrial construction projects.

Fool's
gold or Holy Grail? It's been said that a fool is someone who knows
the cost of everything, but the value of nothing. Yet many global
shippers continue to fall for the fool's gold of cheap transportation
costs, often at the expense of the Holy Grail of longer-term, more
broad-based cost reductions that could benefit their bottom lines.
